The Los Angeles Dodgers confirmed that Vincent Edward “Vin” Scully, the team’s voice for more than six decades, died. He was 94.

As fans grieve his loss, here’s a look at the radio and TV broadcaster’s life and net worth.

Scully was born in New York City and raised in Manhattan. He was noted for his distinctive voice and signature introduction. His father worked as a silk salesman, and his mother was a housewife. Scully was reared by his mother when his father died when he was four, and she later remarried a merchant sailor.

Scully got his first job in Manhattan at the Pennsylvania Hotel, where he delivered beer and mail, cleaned silver, and moved clothes racks in the basement.

After two years in the Navy, he enrolled at Fordham University, where he began his career as a student broadcaster and journalist. He co-founded the school’s FM radio station and worked as an associate sports editor for The Fordham Ram while there. Scully was also a member of the Rams baseball team, where he played center field.

Scully was employed as an announcer for the Brooklyn Dodgers’ broadcast team in 1950, at the age of 22, alongside Red Barber and Connie Desmond. In 1958, Scully relocated with the Dodgers to their new home in Los Angeles. He called games for the Dodgers for 67 years before retiring at the age of 88.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Scully made between $1 million and $1.5 million each year between 1990 and 2008. He reportedly earned $3 million in compensation every year beginning in 2008.

He also held separate contracts with networks such as NBC and Fox at various stages in his career, according to the publication.

On September 25, 2016, Scully broadcast his final home game for the Dodgers. On Oct. 2, that year, he announced his retirement after announcing the Dodgers’ season finale in San Francisco.

Scully also appeared in a number of films and television shows over his career, including “For Love of the Game,” “Bachelor in Paradise,” and “Wake Me When It’s Over.”

In 2016, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Barack Obama, as well as the Ford C. Frick Award from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, the iconic broadcaster had a net worth of $25 million at the time of his death.

Scully, who died at his home in Hidden Hills, California, leaves five children, Kevin, Todd, Erin, Kelly, and Catherine, as well as 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, according to Reuters.

Sandra Scully, Vin’s 47-year-old wife, died in January 2021 at the age of 76.
