Anne Heche died nine days after being critically injured in a car accident in Los Angeles. She was 53 years old.

In an email to The New York Times late Sunday, her representative, Holly Baird, confirmed the news, saying Heche had been “peacefully taken off life support.”

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Heche had a net worth of $4 million at the time of her death.

Heche was born in Aurora, Ohio in May 1969. She detailed her turbulent upbringing as the youngest of five children in a family that moved 11 times in her 2001 memoir “Call Me Crazy.”

When Heche was 13, her choir director father died of AIDS at the age of 45, which she claims he contracted from same-sex partners. Heche claimed that her father raped her repeatedly as a child. However, other members of her family disputed the claim.

Nathan, Heche’s brother, died in a car accident when he was 18 years old, just three months after their father died. Heche soon became estranged from her mother.

Heche rose to prominence in the early 1990s as twins on the soap opera “Another World.” Her performance earned her a Daytime Emmy.

In the 1997 gangster drama “Donnie Brasco,” she played Johnny Depp’s girlfriend.

She appeared in several other films that year, including “Wag the Dog,” “Volcano,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and “Six Days, Seven Nights.”

Heche was also in a high-profile relationship with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres at the time, shortly after the comedian came out as gay. They dated for three years before splitting up in 2000.

Heche claimed that her relationship with DeGeneres failed because the TV personality’s goal was to make a lot of money, whereas hers was to find love.

Heche admitted in a 2020 interview with Page Six that her romance with DeGeneres slowed her career. The actress claimed:

“I was in a relationship with Ellen DeGeneres for three-and-a-half years and the stigma attached to that relationship was so bad that I was fired from my multimillion-dollar picture deal and I did not work in a studio picture for 10 years.”

Heche married cameraman Coleman Laffoon in September 2001, whom she met while filming a documentary about Ellen DeGeneres. They married in March 2002, had a son, and divorced seven years later.

Heche was also romantically involved with her “Men in Trees” co-star James Tupper. Atlas, their first child, was born in March 2009. They divorced in 2018.

“Opening Night,” “Catfight,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Armed Response,” “The Last Word,” “The Best of Enemies,” and “The Vanished” were among Heche’s most recent films.

She also played Joyce Dahmer, the mother of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, in 2017’s “My Friend Dahmer,” and from 2017 to 2018, she appeared on the NBC series “The Brave.”

Heche worked on several projects in the months leading up to her car accident on August 5. She finished filming on Lifetime’s “Girl in Room 13” in June, and the show is set to premiere this fall.

According to People, she will also appear in the upcoming horror-thriller “Full Ride” opposite Dermot Mulroney, has a recurring role in “All Rise” on OWN, and is set to appear in Sam Levinson and The Weeknd’s HBO show “Idol.”

Heche and Tupper listed their home in Los Angeles’ Hancock Park neighborhood for $3.95 million in May 2019, then reduced the asking price to $3.695 million the following month. In November 2019, the exes finally accepted $3.165 million for the 4,735-square-foot, four-bedroom home.

DeGeneres expressed her condolences to Heche’s loved ones via Twitter after she was declared brain dead on Friday, calling Heche’s death a “sad day.”
