Demi Lovato has refused to acknowledge whether her new song “29” is about her age gap with ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, but she feels the music speaks for itself.
“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel a lot of nervousness about releasing this song,” the 29-year-old singer told Zane Lowe in an Apple Music interview on Wednesday. “I simply told myself, ‘I have to go for it; I have to own my truth.'”
Lovato, who was in a relationship with Valderrama from 2010 until 2016, stated that “less is frequently more.”
“I’m really careful with how I answer these things because I feel like the song tells it everything,” the former Disney Channel star revealed. “I don’t have to say too much, to be honest.”
When he met the then-17-year-old “Camp Rock” star, the “That ’70s Show” alum was 29 years old.
She sings, “Finally 29 / Funny, exactly like you were you at the time.” “I thought it was only a youthful daydream / But was it yours or mine?”
“Just five years of bleeders, student and a teacher / Far from innocent / What the f-consent? k’s / Numbers warned you not to / But that didn’t stop you,” Lovato sings after declaring herself “too young to drink wine.”
When asked about the insightful lyrics by Lowe, the Grammy nominee remarked that her recent 29th birthday provided her with new “perspective.”
“Turning 29 really opened my eyes,” Lovato explained. “Then, entering treatment and coming to realizations led to my change and the discharge of the emotion contained in this song,” she added.
In her 2017 documentary “Simply Complicated,” Lovato revealed that she “began dating” Valderrama when she was 18.
The former couple remained amicable after their split, with the pop-rock musician declaring that her heart will “always” belong to the “NCIS” actor.
“You don’t share six years with somebody and not give them a piece of your heart and vice versa,” Lovato told viewers. “I’m pretty sure that I’m not going to meet anybody that compares to him.”
After wishing her now-42-year-old ex “the best of luck” on his 2020 engagement to Amanda Pacheco, Lovato told Harper’s Bazaar that they were no longer “in each other’s lives.”
Demi Lovato discussed the age gap more positively before to the separation, which is fair considering that she was still very much in love.
“Of course, I was like, ‘Oh my god. You’re so attractive,'” Demi Lovato told Complex in 2015. “And he was like, ‘You are not 18. Get away from me.’ Then we became really good friends, and he was there for me through a number of situations and breakups and whatever. Then as I got older and we grew closer, it was like, ‘Hey, maybe we should try this thing out.’ We did, and we’ve basically been together ever since.'”
