Samsung, on Wednesday, Aug. 10, unveiled the latest models in its foldable phone lineups as part of its efforts to bring the phones to the masses.

At Samsung’s annual Unpacked event, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 were both unveiled. Along with the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, the two foldable phones were unveiled.

The Galaxy Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 will be available on August 26 for around $1,800 and $1,000, respectively.

What is the difference between Z Flip 4 and Fold 4?

While both models are foldable, their appearance and feel are distinct. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 features the clamshell design popularized by Motorola’s Razr. The phone is small and aimed at online content creators, among others.

Meanwhile, the Z Fold 4 is a foldable book. When both are folded, it is near twice the height of the Z Flip 4.

CNET reported when unfurled, the phone expands to a tablet-sized interior screen that the company claims is ideal for multitasking due to its 12GB of RAM.

Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 Features and Design

The Z Fold 4 is equipped with a matching set of features. In the back, there are three cameras, one of which has a telephoto lens. Pocket Lint stated that the Z Fold 4 also has a larger battery.

The front displays are also unique. The Z Flip 4 has a small display on the bottom of the cover, which Samsung has improved with each iteration. The Z Flip 4’s display is the same size as a standard smartphone screen.

Despite the differences in design, Samsung’s biggest advantage is its software. The Flip 4 has a bottom-screen trackpad feature in its Flex Mode, which splits apps between the top and bottom portions of the screen when folded halfway, similar to the Z Fold 4.

With the updates, you will be able to navigate the top half of the screen using the bottom half of the screen as a trackpad, making it easier to manipulate apps in Flex Mode.

Each foldable phone also includes nighttime photography improvements introduced with the Galaxy S22, such as night portrait-mode photos.

Samsung Executives Discuss the Importance of Foldable Phones

Roh Tae-moon, the head of Samsung’s mobile business, explained why folding phones are important to the company’s business in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal.

According to Roh, Samsung’s foldable phones are attracting three times more brand switchers than regular Galaxy S phones.

This means that people are abandoning other brands, such as Apple, Oppo, and Xiaomi, in favour of Samsung phones.

According to Roh, the change is a “significant percentage and a positive sign because it is about switchers from other brands, not Samsung users switching to other Samsung devices.”

Samsung hopes to make the potential brand switcher mainstream, with foldable phone sales exceeding those of its previous flagship smartphone, the Galaxy phone.
