BTS Jungkook and BTS Jin may now postpone their military service until 2022 and 2027, respectively, if they want to.

The Ministry of National Defense of South Korea announced, on Tuesday, Dec. 22, that K-Pop artists and personalities who were recognized as “Merit Awardees in the Field of Popular Culture and Arts” are also eligible to request delays in their mandatory military service.

Reports have it that the policy is effective six months after the Ministry of National Defense of South Korea’s public declaration. It can be recalled that the State Council of South Korea established this specific public policy a few days after the same military law was passed by the South Korean General Assembly on Dec. 1.

A Presidential Amendment, which is expected to be set in stone in 2021, will determine the qualifications and requirements to be considered as “Merit Awardees in the Field of Popular Culture and Arts.”

Moreover, the Ministry of National Defense of South Korea is carefully scrutinizing the said policy so no famous K-Pop artists and personalities can exploit and mishandle it.

As a matter of fact, only those included in the categories set by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) are allowed to file delay requests.

Most, if not all, fans are aware that all able-bodied men in South Korea, aging between 18 and 28, are required to serve in the military for 20 months.

However, under the so-called “BTS Military Act,” certain K-pop stars can defer their service should the culture minister approve and recommend it. Prior to the passing of this bill, only classical musicians and high-profile athletes are allowed to have military service deferrals or exemptions.

Since BTS has been sweeping the world in recent years and its skyrocketing popularity overseas, members Jin, Jimin, Jungkook, RM, J-Hope, Suga, and V are expected to enjoy this perk.
